com/9n09Br4BUS — Edilson J. Silva (@edilsonbuzz) October 22, 2023 Mahomes was interviewed this week by former Chiefs teammate Alex Smith, who is host of “The SiriusXM Blitz” every Thursday from 11 a. m.
to 2 p. m. on the SiriusXM NFL Radio channel.
Part of the discussion was what makes Reid a great coach. Mahomes said Reid, who has the fourth-most coaching victories in NFL history (253), brings out the best in players. “I’ve always said that it’s the way he relates to you as a person,” Mahomes said.
“He makes you be the best person that you can be. And, like you’re saying, he lets you be you. He doesn’t try to make you be this system quarterback or make you do what his offense wants to do.
He makes the offense around the quarterback and around the players that he has. And I think you see that as he evolves with every team that he has every single year. “Our offense looks different (this season) than it’s looked in the past few years because our personnel is different.
We got new receivers. We got new guys on the offensive line. And I think that’s what makes him so great is that he does that.
” Mahomes believes another of Reid’s strengths is his desire for players to show off their personalities. That allows the Chiefs to bring in players who may not have done well with other teams and find success under Reid. It doesn’t matter what side of the ball someone plays.
“And then the same with the defense. He lets the defense just go out there and let their personalities show,” Mahomes said. “He always says, ‘Let your personality show,’ and that’s why I think you can see that he can get any player and he can fit him into the team and they can have success.
“And like I’m saying, he truly cares about the people. He cares about you as a person more than he cares about you as a player. And I think guys respect that and they go out and put everything on the line.
They know that the coach really cares about them. ” .
