Unbeaten Air Force football remains on the outside as latest Top 25 polls are released
A 5-0 start to the season wasn’t quite enough to push Air Force football into the latest Top 25 polls. The Falcons, riding a 10-game winning streak, missed the AP Top 25 by six spots (effectively meaning they were the 31st-ranked team) with seven points. They were even closer in the coaches’ poll, ranking behind only Maryland, Kansas State and Texas A&M among teams that received votes but were left out of the Top 25.
This is an improvement of seven spots in the coaches’ poll but keeps Air Force in the same position in the AP poll. The Falcons rolled past San Diego State 49-10 on Saturday night, their ninth consecutive victory by double digits. Air Force has the nation’s No.
1 rushing offense (340. 5 ypg), the most efficient passing attack (248. 87 rating) and the No.
2 total defense (223 ypg). Asked after Saturday night’s win if he would be checking the polls when they came out on Sunday, quarterback Zac Larrier explained his position on the rankings. “Every team that plays well wants to be recognized for playing well,” Larrier said after a game in which he completed 6-of-7 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns and carried eight times for 103 rushing yards.
“But if there’s any team that doesn’t care, it would be Air Force. It’s cool to look at the polls, but it’s not about how we are ranked in Week 5. Nobody’s going to celebrate being ranked in Week 5.
It’s about how we finish these next seven weeks of the season, so we’re just going to keep moving forward. ” The Falcons (5-0, 3-0 Mountain West) are off this week and return to action at home vs. Wyoming on Oct.
14. The Cowboys must face No. 24 Fresno State in their next game before coming to Air Force.
