Aztecs’ Cody Moon and Jack Browning earn Mountain West Player of the Week honors
BY KIRK KENNEY AUG. 28, 2023 12:02 PM PT Linebacker Cody Moon made his San Diego State debut memorable with a team-high 12 tackles in Saturday’s win over Ohio. Kicker/punter Jack Browning picked up where he left off last season, kicking a pair of field goals while averaging 56.
3 yards a punt in the game. Moon and Browning were recognized for their efforts on Monday morning when they were honored by the Mountain West, Moon as MW Defensive Player of the Week and Browning as MW Special Teams Player of the Week. Three conference teams played in “Week Zero.
” Moon, who transferred from New Mexico in January, was seemingly all over the field. Seven of his 12 tackles were solo. He also had a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry as the SDSU limited Ohio to a pair of field goals until the Bobcats scored a touchdown in the game’s final two minutes.
Browning was the Mountain West’s Special Teams Player of the Year last season, earning player of the week honors twice along the way. The senior from West Hills High School kicked field goals of 49 and 21 yards against Ohio. Each of his three punts went at least 50 yards, with his best effort going 60 yards.
Browning’s 56. 3-yard punt average was the longest in the country among the seven games played in Week Zero. San Jose State wide receiver Nick Nash was named MW Offensive Player of the Week after catching three touhdown passes in a loss to USC.
Hawaii wide receiver Pofele Ashlock was named MW Freshman of the Week after catching seven passes for 127 yards and a touchdown in a loss to Vanderbilt. .
