Arizona State quarterback Drew Pyne injured early in Camp Tontozona scrimmage
Arizona Republic PAYSON — Arizona State football coach Kenny Dillingham might not have a decision to make on a starting quarterback after all. It has been a battle between red-shirt senior Trenton Bourguet and red-shirt sophomore Drew Pyne, a transfer from Notre Dame. But Pyne injured a hamstring early in the Sun Devils scrimmage Saturday morning at Camp Tontozona.
Being in a remote location the staff does not have the medical resources it does at home, so the severity of the injury is not know yet. Pyne was rolling out and decided to run rather than pass. He gained several yards up the sideline before being forced out of bounds.
He was on the ground for several minutes before being helped up and into a medical tent. "He's OK. He has a little minor hamstring tear.
We'll find out the severity of it but he's in good spirits," Dillingham said. Bourguet started the last five games last season and played better in the spring game, giving him the edge. But Pyne has improved over the course of fall camp to where most considered it a tossup as to who would get the nod.
Notre Dame went 8-2 in 10 games Pyne started in 2022. He completed 164 of 254 passes for 2,021 yards, 22 touchdowns with only six interceptions. Against USC he completed his first 15 passes and ended up going going 23-for-26.
That . 884 completion percentage is second-best in a single game in program history, trailing just Steve Buerlein’s . 909 (10-for-11).
Dillingham also said that true freshman defensive back Montana Warren will be out six to eight weeks with a shoulder injury. He seemed to injure himself early in Friday's practice but came back and participated, even getting two interceptions in scrimmage play off balls thrown by Pyne. His showing both in the spring and fall camp had him in position to see some playing time.
