More on the significance of five-star edge Colin Simmons to Texas
There are few players who you could say would make or break a recruiting class. Duncanville five-star edge rusher Colin Simmons is that for the Texas Longhorns. By simply earning his commitment, the Longhorns’ 2024 recruiting class is a success.
The Simmons decision is huge for a number of reasons. Perhaps the biggest is that he brings elite play to a position that has lacked on the Forty Acres in recent seasons. The Duncanville star makes this class successful in the same way left tackle Kelvin Banks and running back Bijan Robinson did for their respective classes.
They immediately filled positions of need with a plus player. That doesn’t mean the Longhorns should be done. Five-star talents critical to the team’s success are still on the board.
Even so, simply adding a plus player at edge could make all the difference for Texas in reaching its goals. Texas doesn’t need the distinction of another Top 3 class to continue building a contender. It doesn’t need to get four-stars in bulk.
The Longhorns need to continue adding difference makers like Banks, Simmons, Johntay Cook, Cedric Baxter and Anthony Hill. The rankings don’t matter. The sum of difference makers matters.
Simmons plans to build the Longhorns’ current recruiting class and is looking to flip some of the team’s biggest losses thus far. He may well accomplish that objective. Whether he does or not, if Texas can retain the five-star talent, his team’s 2024 haul will be a success.
