2-3 minutes 8/11/2023 Ryan Zuke The preseason spotlight continues to shine bright on Michigan running back Blake Corum and quarterback J. J. McCarthy.

The duo was among 45 players named to the Walker Camp 2023 Player of the Year preseason watch list on Friday afternoon. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football. This is the third preseason watch list for both Corum and McCarthy this summer.

Corum’s 2022 All-American season was cut short because of injury, leading to a return for his senior season. He also was named to the Doak Walker Award (top running back) and Maxwell Award (best overall player) watch lists after rushing for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns in 12 games last year. McCarthy is entering his second season as the starter and also has appeared on the watch lists for the Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Award (best quarterback).

With an experienced offensive line in front of him along with the return of Corum, Donovan Edwards and top tight end Colston Loveland, McCarthy faces lofty expectations in 2023. The Walter Camp player of the year award is voted on by the 133 FBS head coaches and sports information directors. The preseason watch lists includes 20 quarterbacks, 11 running backs, five receivers/tight ends, two offensive linemen and seven defensive players.
