Two former Rutgers players get 12-year sentences
Two former Rutgers football players received 12-year prison sentences for armed robbery on Friday. Tejay Johnson, a 26-year-old former cornerback and Andre Boggs a 22-year-old former cornerback pled guilty to armed robberies targeting other students for drugs and cash. According to NJ.com, Johnson spent nearly seven minutes apologizing inside a Middlesex County courtroom. He said he made a "complete fool of himself" and ruined his family name. Johnson was facing a significantly longer sentence before cutting a deal with prosecutors in January. The robberies occurred in New Brunswick between April 26-May 5, 2015 and targeted Rutgers students, who were carrying drugs and cash according to law enforcement. It led to 12 others facing charges along with the firing of former head coach Kyle Flood and forced resignation of Julie Hermann. Johnson and Boggs will have to serve 85 percent of their sentence before being eligible for parole. Johnson played all 13 games for Rutgers in 2012 and was named to the Big East All-Academic Football Team. Hamstring injuries plagued him and ultimately ended his tenure at Rutgers. Boggs appeared in nine games for Rutgers in 2014 and was dismissed from the team in Sept. 2015.
