Texas Tech brings in Johns as OC

Texas Tech went to the Mid-American Conference to get its new offensive coordinator.

Western Michigan offensive coordinator Kevin Johns has been hired for the same position at Texas Tech, the school announced Tuesday.

In addition to being the Red Raiders' offensive coordinator, Johns will be their inside wide receivers coach.

Johns replaces Eric Morris, who left Texas Tech to become the head coach at Incarnate Word.

"We're excited to have Coach Johns join our staff," Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said in a statement. "He has a tremendous record as one of the top offensive minds in college football, and I know he will be a great resource for our staff and players. We'd like to welcome him, his wife Krista and his three sons to Lubbock."

The Red Raiders finished 6-7 overall in 2017 and 3-6 in the Big 12 Conference.

Johns was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Western Michigan for just one season. In 2017, the Chippewas ranked 78th in the nation in total offense and 25th in scoring, averaging 33.5 points per game. Western Michigan finished the season 6-6.

Before that, Johns was on the Indiana staff for six seasons, serving as co-offensive coordinator from 2011-2013 and sole offensive coordinator from 2014-2016.
