CFB Team Report - Syracuse
PLAYERS TO WATCH --RB Dontae Strickland is No. 1 on the depth chart for the opener at Western Michigan. The senior ran 128 times last season for 482 yards and four touchdowns. It's likely he'll again basically split carries with junior Moe Neal (488 yards last season). --QB Eric Dungey, even with his season shortened by a foot injury, was the team's leading rusher last season with 595 yards and nine touchdowns. He has completed 560 of 908 passes in his career (61.7 percent) for 6,472 yards, with 40 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. He would have faced an NFL-caliber cornerback in the opener, but Western Michigan's Sam Beal declared for the NFL supplemental draft in the summer. --DT Chris Slayton made 28 tackles last season, including 8.5 for loss, and should be a key component in stopping Western Michigan's running attack. Slayton has upside as a potential late-round draft pick. SERIES HISTORY: This is the first meeting between the programs. Western Michigan will complete the home-and-home series with a game at Syracuse in 2019. QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think it's a huge advantage for them that they know our players. They recruited them, they watched them on tape. They should have a good feel for what they can and can't do." -- Syracuse coach Dino Babers, on three Western Michigan coaches who used to work for the Orange.
