NFL Friday Injury Report: Wentz ruled out by Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams after coach Doug Pederson said earlier in the day that he was questionable.
The Philadelphia finally put an end to the the drama surrounding quarterback Carson Wentz's back injury.
The Eagles on Saturday officially ruled out Wentz for Sunday's matchup against the Los Angeles Rams due to a fracture in his back, halting days of speculation on his availability.
It began Wednesday with reports that Wentz might not play in Sunday's game against the Rams because of the injury, which head coach Doug Pederson described as spasms.
Following that, additional reports described the injury as a fracture after he underwent testing Tuesday and that Wentz could be shut down for the rest of the season.
The situation was further muddied Friday when Pederson told the media Wentz would be listed as questionable Sunday with a "stress" injury to his back only to have him show up on the injury report as doubtful.
Pederson did say that Wentz would make the cross-country trip with the team to Los Angeles, while acknowledging that it could take three months for him to fully recover.
When asked if he would confirm that Wentz has a fractured vertebrae, Pederson said, "Here's what I can confirm. That he has a stress injury; that this thing has evolved over time and it requires zero surgery to heal."
A reporter asked, "stress fracture?" and Pederson responded, "A stress injury, yeah. You can word it how you want, fracture, injury."
Pederson was providing as little information as possible when he was asked why he wouldn't be specific about the injury to the team's franchise quarterback. The coach said, "Because I don't think it needs to be aired out publicly. It's an in-house decision and that's the way we're going to keep it and it's in Carson's best interest right now."
Wentz showed up on the injury report with a back injury in October, so naturally there were questions whether the latest issue began then. That's when Pederson got testy and said, "He has a stress injury, evolved over time, and he requires no surgery. I'm not asking or answering any more questions about it. We're playing the Rams in two days, if you guys haven't figured this out. So, he's listed as questionable and that's the way it is."
Of course, it turned out that's not the way it is with Wentz listed as doubtful.
On Saturday morning, the team posted on its official Twitter account: "Update: QB Wentz (back) has been ruled out."
