Nebraska QB Gebbia to transfer

Nebraska head coach Scott Frost will have only one scholarship quarterback available after Tristan Gebbia was granted his release.
Nebraska head coach Scott Frost will have only one scholarship quarterback available after Tristan Gebbia was granted his release.
Nebraska confirmed on Tuesday what had been reported on Monday - that quarterback Tristan Gebbia will transfer. "Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost confirmed Tuesday that quarterback Tristan Gebbia has asked for and been granted a release from Nebraska," the school said in a Twitter post. Over the weekend, Nebraska announced that true freshman Adrian Martinez had been named the starting quarterback, winning a competition with Gebbia, a redshirt freshman. The departure of Gebbia means the Cornhuskers have just one scholarship quarterback available this season -- Martinez. Sophomore walk-on Andrew Bunch will serve as Martinez's backup, while another walk-on, freshman Matt Masker, is the third quarterback. Noah Vedral, a transfer from UCF, is on the Nebraska roster and is on scholarship, but he must sit out this season to satisfy NCAA rules regarding transfers. Gebbia was rated the No. 9 pro-style quarterback in the country by 247Sports.com in 2017. He was recruited to Nebraska by Frost's predecessor, Mike Riley, who preferred a drop-back passer for his offense. Frost's offense utilizes a quarterback who can pass or run, and Martinez is better suited to that. Martinez will become the first true freshman in Nebraska history to start the first game of the season. He was Frost's first recruiting target after he took over as Nebraska's head coach.
