CFB notebook: VanGorder named Louisville DC

Brian VanGorder was named defensive coordinator at Louisville on Monday, bringing an impressive resume that includes a Broyles Award as the top college assistant in the nation. VanGorder, 58, served as defensive coordinator at Georgia (2001-04), Auburn (2012) and Notre Dame (2014-15). He won the Broyles Award in 2003 after the Bulldogs allowed the third fewest points in the nation. VanGorder was linebackers coach for the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. He was promoted to Atlanta's defensive coordinator from 2008 to 2011 with the Falcons making the playoffs in three of those seasons. VanGorder served as a defensive analyst at Georgia in 2016 and at Oklahoma State in 2017. Louisville was 62nd in total defense last season under coordinator Peter Sirmon after finishing 14th under Todd Grantham in 2016. VanGorder inherits a defense that lost nine full-time or part-time starters. --The iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will become the United Airlines Memorial Coliseum as part of a 16-year, $69 million sponsorship deal between the University of Southern California, which operates the stadium, and the airline. The agreement will help fund a $270 million upgrade of the 95-year-old venue that is scheduled to host the Olympic Games for the third time in history in 2028. Renovations have already begun and are expected to be completed in approximately 1 1/2 years. Among the changes are a new press box and new concourses. The name change will take place in August 2019. A new branded logo is being developed. --Dismissed Notre Dame wide receiver Kevin Stephenson was arrested for a fourth time in less than 18 months on multiple chargers, according to a WNDU.com report in South Bend, Ind. The arrest occurred Friday night on charges of marijuana possession, visiting a common nuisance and possession of drug paraphernalia. About a month earlier, Stephenson was arrested for shoplifting and then suspended by the football program. That came a day after he was charged with marijuana possession after a traffic stop, driving without a valid license and speeding. At that point, he was already on probation for marijuana possession in 2016. Stephenson, a sophomore, was suspended for the first four games of the 2017 season for unrelated reasons to his 2016 arrest and suspended again in December. At that time, he was leading the Fighting Irish with five touchdown receptions and yards per catch (18.9). He finished the season with 19 catches for 359 yards.
