CFB notebook: Ohio State's Bosa to leave school

Ohio State junior defensive end Nick Bosa will withdraw from school to rehab an injury and prepare for the 2019 NFL Draft, the school announced Tuesday. Bosa suffered a "core muscle injury" against TCU on Sept. 15 and underwent surgery five days later. At the time, coach Urban Meyer said he hoped "to get him back as soon as possible." Bosa is expected to be in the mix to be the No. 1 pick in the draft. He is No. 2, behind Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver, on the Big Board of NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst Rob Rang. Bosa, while playing in three games this season, had 14 tackles, including six for loss and four sacks. Bosa last season was the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, an award his older brother Joey won twice as a defensive end for the Buckeyes. Joey was the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. --Tennessee outside linebacker Jonathan Kongbo will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Per coach Jeremy Pruitt, Kongbo was injured during the third quarter of Tennessee's 30-24 win at Auburn on Saturday. An MRI on Sunday confirmed the severity of the injury for Kongbo, who started five of six games this season. Pruitt said that Kongbo is expected to have surgery this week. Kongbo had two tackles as well as an interception during the second quarter of Saturday's contest for the Volunteers, who snapped an 11-game losing skid in the Southeastern Conference. --Mississippi wide receiver D.K. Metcalf will miss the remainder of the season with a neck injury. Metcalf, who sustained the injury in Saturday's win over Arkansas, leads the Rebels with five touchdown catches and is second on the club in both receptions (26) and receiving yards (569). Coach Matt Luke told reporters that Metcalf is expected to require surgery. --UCLA linebacker Jaelan Phillips and running back Soso Jamabo will miss the remainder of the season due to head injuries, the team announced. Because of the new NCAA redshirt rules, both players could save this season's eligibility as neither has played in more than four games in 2018. Phillips recorded just one sack in four games after entering the season with a wrist injury. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound sophomore was injured in an offseason scooter accident. Jamabo provided a strong contribution with 1,170 yards rushing over his first three seasons before seeing his role reduced in 2018. The senior, who was suspended for the first two games of the campaign, had just five carries for 12 yards this year. --Arkansas coach Chad Morris announced that Devwah Whaley underwent surgery to repair an ankle injury sustained in Saturday's loss to Mississippi. The surgery will sideline the running back for at least the next two games. The Razorbacks are hoping he can return for the Nov. 10 home game against LSU.
