Ryan Colburn

It's not surprising that Colburn lists NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young as his favorite player growing up, as this mobile lefty's play is reminiscent of Young in his younger days. Colburn's career at FSU started off slow, as he waited behind starter (and current Miami Dolphins quarterback) Tom Brandstater during his redshirt freshman and sophomore seasons (4-for-5, 58 yards in 2007, no stats in 2008). In his first year leading the Bulldogs in 2009, Colburn completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 2,459 yards, throwing 19 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. As a senior, he improved all of those numbers (63.1 percent, 2,817, 23, 9). Though Colburn's southpaw delivery may remind scouts a bit of Young, he lacks the former BYU star's running speed and arm strength. In fact, his lack of arm and small hands result in some rough throws. Therefore, he must rely on his intelligence, work ethic and superb NFL coaching to earn a roster spot on a team using West Coast Offense principles.

strengths

Good height and mobility for the position. Stands poised in the pocket. Nice footwork whether working from under center or shotgun. Stays balanced even when pressured, can step up to make throws. Accurate placement of short out-routes and passes between the hashes. Often used on rollouts, is accurate on the run and makes correct decisions. Anticipates where his receiver will be. Practiced at ball fakes. Capable of getting first downs with his feet on bootlegs and if defense leaves opening up the middle. Used on quarterback draws and runs read option, runs tough and takes the big hit. Leader in the huddle.

weaknesses

Owns a marginal NFL arm. Ball comes out of his small left hand poorly, even on short throws and screen passes. Floats too many throws and has to release early due to a lack of velocity, allowing NFL defenses to close quickly. Loses accuracy on intermediate to deep throws. Receivers have to wait for his passes past 45 yards. Must learn to slide, his height leaves him open to big hits when on the run. Only average straight-line speed and is not elusive in space.
