Mike Edwards

CB, KR · Hawaii
After helping Glenville High School in Cleveland win three conference titles, Edwards enrolled at Tennessee 2009 as a four-star recruit and played in eight games as a true freshman. However, he left Knoxville after being dismissed from the program following an attempted robbery charge. He redshirted at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas in 2010 before ultimately landing at Hawaii for the 2011 season. Edwards made an immediate impact for the Warriors, starting 12 of 13 games he appeared in and earning second-team All-WAC honors as a kick return specialist and third team as a defensive back. A father of two, Edwards decided to skip his senior season and head to the NFL following a first-team All-Mountain West 2012 campaign. "It was a difficult decision," Edwards told the Honolulu Advertiser. "I felt it was the best thing for my family. I have two sons and I want to provide for them." A track star with excellent speed, Edwards' skills as a return specialist will significantly increase his value among NFL scouts. He reportedly received mid-round grades from the NFL Advisory Committee. Over the past two seasons, Edwards totaled three interceptions and 26 pass break-ups for the Warriors, adding three touchdowns on kickoff returns in 2012. "I'll miss him not only as a player but as a young man," Hawaii head coach Norm Chow said about Edwards. "We had a great relationship. We wish him all the best."

strengths

Tough, wiry frame and gets physical with receivers, not letting bigger players push him around. A player not lacking in confidence, he is aggressive with the ball in the air and shows good timing to get his hands up and knock down passes. Edwards has good speed and pursuit skills, adding return ability on special teams and also seeing some time on offense as a RB/WR.

weaknesses

A tick undersized for an NFL cornerback. Off-field concerns stemming from an attempted robbery arrest that led to his dismissal from Tennessee after the 2009 season.
