Zane Gonzalez

It is hard not to venture into hyperbole when discussing Gonzalez, the reigning Lou Groza Award winner as the nation's top kicker and the all-time FBS career record holder for most field goals (96) and points scored (494) from the position. Gonzalez made 23 of 25 field goals as a senior, including an eye-popping 7 of 9 from 50+ yards, and therefore 16 for 16 on all kicks under 50 yards. Among those successful kicks was a 59-yarder against Colorado, the longest of any kicker in 2016 and one of three 50+ yarders he converted against the Buffaloes. Gonzalez was hardly just effective as a senior. He earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors as a true freshman, hitting 25 of 30 field goals and all 83 PATS. The least accurate season of his career came in 2015 when he hit "only" 26 of 34, good for a 76.5% conversion rate that would have ranked higher than several NFL kickers that season. For his career, Gonzalez converted 83% of his field goal attempts, setting six FBS records. STRENGTHS: Possesses good size for the position with a solid overall musculature. Quick to the ball, showing good leg strength, as well as excellent trajectory and accuracy. Shows the ability to angle his kicks, squeezing it through the uprights from either hash. Reliable distance and accuracy on kickoffs, recording touchbacks on 77.45% of them over the past two seasons, leading the country. WEAKNESSES: Better distance than explosiveness as a kicker, raising questions about whether he'll fare as well in less-than-ideal weather and field conditions. Accuracy and production speak for themselves but also set a record for the most attempts ever by an FBS kicker (115). IN OUR VIEW: The question isn't whether Gonzalez will be selected but how early. It does not necessarily help Gonzalez's cause, however, that last year's "can't miss" rookie Robert Aguayo struggled, making 71% of his attempts (with a long of just 43 yards), both worst in the league among fulltime kickers.

As a senior at Deer Park High School Gonzalez was perfect on his kicks, including 10-for-10 on field goals and 100-percent on extra points His long field goal was a 44-yarder and 44 of his 62 kickoffs went for touchbacks.
