Tim Barnes

OG, C · Missouri
It took time for Barnes to get his shot to follow 2007 Rimington Trophy finalist Adam Spieker, but his play the past three seasons has put him on the radar of NFL scouts. Barnes redshirted in 2006, then played in seven games as a reserve behind Spieker the following year before taking the reins of the Tigers' complex offense. He has started every game the past three seasons, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors in 2008 and first-team All-Big 12 accolades from league coaches in 2010. A veteran in the pivot with most of the qualities NFL teams want in their center including durability, intelligence and toughness. He's not considered an elite prospect because of his average athleticism, but could have a long career at the next level in the right situation.

strengths

Stocky center despite his height, using his large midsection and leg strength to anchor and prevent nose tackles from pushing him into the quarterback. Gives help to guard or tackle if uncovered. Run-blocking looks like his best asset despite playing in a spread offense. Comes off the ball hard and strong, capable of moving smaller defensive tackles with ease. Stays on his man throughout the play, keeping his arm extended into his chest to keep separation. Consistently takes "MIKE" linebackers out of the play with effort and strength. Strong leader on and off the field since his high school days and well-liked by his teammates.

weaknesses

Not an exceptional athlete. Must recoil more quickly, get his hands up and move his feet to stay balanced against NFL defenders. Feet tend to be in cement after initial contact, when pass blocking; quicker defenders can swim and run around him to get a secondary rush. Footwork to second level is only adequate, won't be a force downfield. Has had labrum repair surgery on both shoulders.

Earned numerous All-State, All-Conference and All-District honors during his career at Pettis County Northwest High School in Hughesville, Mo.

Excellent all-around athlete who was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and a two-year letterman in baseball, in addition to his exploits on the gridiron

Has also earned 1st-Team All-Conference and All-District honors in basketball, as well

A solid student who is a member of the National Honor Society, and also served on his school's student council
