Chris Scott

OG, OT · Tennessee
A coveted Parade All-American, Scott had to wait his turn to see the field once he joined the Volunteers. After redshirting in 2005 and only playing limited snaps in a backup role in 2006, Scott became the Vols' starting right guard as a sophomore. He started the first eight games inside, before taking over the left tackle position for the final six games after an injury to teammate Eric Young (now with the St. Louis Rams). With Scott operating on the blind side, Tennessee broke the NCAA record for least amount of sacks given up in at least 300 passing attempts, allowing only three sacks in 519 attempts. Scott's impromptu start at left tackle was just the beginning. He remained there in 2008-09, starting the last 31 games of his career on the blind side. Playing a significant role in the breakout senior campaign enjoyed by quarterback Jonathan Crompton and running back Montario Hardesty, Scott earned second-team all-SEC recognition from the media and league coaches in 2009. He did not allow a sack during the regular season, though struggled against Virginia Tech's speed in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Blessed with great size and strength, Scott's experience playing tackle and guard makes him one of the more intriguing second-tier linemen of the 2010 draft. He lacks the quick feet to remain at left tackle in the NFL, but has the experience to slide over there in a pinch and the drive blocking to compete for a starting role at guard or right tackle early in his career.

pass blocking

Only average initial quickness. Gets good depth on his kick-step due to his wide gait and arm length, though is still susceptible to pure speed rushers. Catches the pass rusher and has the strong hands to control his opponent when he does so. Shuffles his feet with adequately, but has only moderate balance. Struggles to re-direct inside when a pass rusher is able to cross his face.

pulling/trapping

Rarely asked to do in this offense and has only marginal quickness to handle making this transition at the NFL level. Lumbers to the second level and doesn't re-direct well to handle the moving target. Good strength to latch on and dominate linebackers when he can surprise them. Lack of balance and agility limits his effectiveness as a cut-blocker.

intangibles

Started his final 39 games for the Volunteers (8 at right guard, 31 at left tackle). Characterized by Lane Kiffin as "the most improved guy from spring." Might have to be monitored with his weight. Has been listed as high as 345, but reportedly slimmed down to 315 as a senior.

run blocking

At least moderate initial quickness as a drive blocker. Lacks the quickness and agility to consistently make the lateral cut block or to consistently seal off the edge. Massive man with great upper body strength to control his opponent as a drive blocker. Can latch on and sustain. When he keeps his feet moving, he can ride the defender out of the play entirely. Flashes some nasty and looks to pancake his opponent when he can. Doesn't keep his feet moving often enough, however, and instead leans into the defender. Lacks the agility to consistently get to the second level and effectively block defenders in space.

downfield

Inconsistent effort to block downfield. Lacks the agility and balance to consistently hit and sustain at the second level. Good strength to latch on and dominate linebackers when he can surprise them. Lack of balance and agility limits his effectiveness as a cut-blocker.

initial quickness

Only moderate initial quickness off the snap in pass protection. Quicker moving forward as a run blocker, but is among the last offensive linemen off the ball. Struggles against quicker pass rushers. Does not have the initial quickness to remain at left tackle in the NFL.
